French toast is a staple breakfast in my household yum! It is a classic breakfast dish loved by many for its delightful combination of crispy edges and a soft, custard-like center. While it may seem to be a simple recipe, achieving the perfect balance of flavors and textures requires a few key tips and tricks. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of making the best French toast, ensuring a delicious and satisfying start to your day.
Ingredients: French Toast Recipe
- 4 slices of Brioche/Challah bread
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tbsp cane sugar
- 2 cups half-and-half for a richer taste
- 2 tablespoons of cane sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- Butter
- And most of all a pinch of love
Instructions:
In a shallow bowl or pie plate, whisk together the eggs, half-&-half, cane sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon until well combined. This mixture will serve as the custard for your French toast.
Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing it to soak for about 10 seconds on each side. Be sure to coat the bread thoroughly but avoid over soaking, as it can make the toast too soggy.
Cook the French toast:
Add a small amount of butter to the heated skillet or griddle.
Place the soaked bread slices onto the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown. Adjust the heat as needed to prevent burning. Cook in batches, if necessary, ensuring that there is enough space between the slices for even cooking.
Once cooked, transfer the French toast to a warm oven (set at around 200°F/93°C) to keep them warm while you cook the remaining slices.
Serve the French toast warm with your choice of toppings such as maple syrup, fresh berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
Tips for Perfect French Toast:
Use thickly sliced bread: Thick bread slices, such as brioche or challah, work best for French toast. Moreover, they would absorb the custard without becoming too mushy.
Stale bread is ideal: Using slightly stale bread allows it to absorb the custard better, resulting in a more flavorful French toast. In addition to that, if you have fresh bread, you can leave the slices out overnight.
Add flavor to the custard: Experiment with additional flavors such as a dash of nutmeg, orange zest, or a splash of your favorite liqueur (e.g., Grand Marnier) to enhance the custard’s taste.
Preheat the griddle or skillet: Make sure the cooking surface is adequately preheated to ensure even browning and a crispy exterior.
Use low to medium heat: Cooking the French toast over medium heat allows for even browning and prevents the toast from burning before the center is fully cooked.
So, go ahead and indulge in the pleasure of a perfectly made French toast, and start your day on a delicious note!
