Crispy Fried shrimp is a classic recipe that delights taste buds with its crispy, golden exterior and tender, juicy interior. Whether I’m preparing it for a family dinner, a party, or just to satisfy a craving, knowing how to make fried shrimp at home can elevate anyone’s cooking game.

Ingredients
  • 1 pound of fresh or thawed shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs/ 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp cajun seasoning
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp lemon juice if use eggs
  • Avocado oil oil for frying
Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preparing the Shrimp

Start by rinsing the shrimp under cold water and patting them dry with paper towels. Ensuring the shrimp are dry helps the batter adhere better and results in a crispier texture.

  1. Seasoning the Shrimp

In a medium bowl, mix cajun seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the shrimp, making sure each piece is evenly coated.

  1. Setting Egg batter

In a bowl whisk the eggs, garlic and onion powder, paprika, salt & black pepper together until well combined. Then, pour egg mixture onto the shrimp. Marinate for 30 minutes.

  1. Breading the Shrimp

For the dry ingredients add flour, cornstarch and the seasoning above. Next dredge each seasoned shrimp into the flour mix, pressing gently to ensure the breading adheres well. Shake off any extra flour.

  1. Frying the Shrimp

Heat avocado oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil’s readiness by dropping a small piece of bread into it; if it sizzles and turns golden brown, the oil is ready.

Carefully add the breaded shrimp to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the shrimp in batches if necessary to maintain the oil temperature. Cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove the shrimp from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  1. Serving the Fried Shrimp

Transfer the fried shrimp to a serving platter and garnish with lemon wedges and fresh parsley. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauces, such as , sweet chili sauce tartar sauce, or a zesty aioli.

Tips for Perfect Fried Shrimp
  • Maintain Oil Temperature: Keeping the oil at a consistent temperature ensures even cooking and prevents the shrimp from becoming greasy.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Frying too many shrimp at once can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy shrimp. Fry in small batches for the best texture.
  • Season Generously: Proper seasoning enhances the shrimp’s natural flavors. Don’t skimp on the spices in the bread mixture.

Making fried shrimp at home is a delightful and rewarding experience. With this guide, you can create crispy, flavorful fried shrimp that will impress your family and friends. Remember to follow the steps carefully, use fresh ingredients, and maintain the right oil temperature for the best results. Enjoy!
